Shedding Season Solutions: Tips to Manage Your Dog’s Coat

Spring is here, and that means shedding season is in full swing! As dogs transition from their winter coats to a lighter, warmer-weather look, pet parents often find themselves covered in fur. But don’t worry—we’ve got tips to keep shedding under control while keeping your pup’s coat healthy and their mind engaged.

Grooming Tips for Different Coat Types

Every dog’s coat is unique, and proper grooming is key to reducing loose fur and keeping their skin in top shape.

Short-Coated Breeds (Labradors, Beagles, Pugs)

  • Use a rubber curry brush or bristle brush to remove loose hair.
  • Bathe as needed (every 4-6 weeks) with a moisturizing dog shampoo.

Double-Coated Breeds (Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds)

  • Brush daily with an undercoat rake to prevent matting.
  • Avoid shaving their coat—this protects them from the elements!
  • A de-shedding tool can help remove excess fur during peak shedding times

Curly or Wavy-Coated Breeds (Poodles, Doodles, Portuguese Water Dogs)

  • Brush at least 3-4 times per week with a slicker brush and metal comb.
  • Schedule regular trims to prevent matting.

Silky & Long-Haired Breeds (Yorkies, Shih Tzus, Afghan Hounds)

  • Daily brushing prevents tangles and reduces shedding.
  • Use a detangling spray for easier grooming sessions.

Keep Your Dog Distracted While Brushing

Not all dogs love being brushed, but you can make it a positive experience by keeping them occupied!

Offer a long-lasting chew like a Yeti Dog Chew—this keeps them engaged while you brush.
Try our Puff & Play Toy if your dog isn’t territorial with their toys. They’ll enjoy working on their treat while you groom them!
Use a lick mat with peanut butter (dog-safe) to keep them still and entertained.

⚠️ Always proceed with your dog’s attitude in mind when offering a toy or chew during grooming. If your dog tends to be territorial, it’s best to use another form of distraction to keep grooming stress-free

Nutrition for Healthy Skin & Fur

A balanced diet plays a huge role in managing shedding! Make sure your pup is getting the right nutrients:

High-Quality Protein – Supports strong hair follicles and reduces excessive shedding.
Omega-3 & Omega-6 Fatty Acids – Found in fish oil or flaxseed, these promote a shiny, healthy coat.
Vitamins A & E – Help maintain skin elasticity and hydration.
Hydration is Key – Make sure your dog always has access to fresh water to keep their skin from drying out.

⚠️ Always consult your veterinarian before introducing any supplements into your dog’s diet. They can recommend the best options based on your pet’s specific needs.

Managing shedding season doesn’t have to be overwhelming! With the right grooming routine, nutrition, and mental stimulation, you can keep your pup happy, healthy, and looking their best all season long.
