Paws Off the Pavement: Summer Paw Care Tips for Happy, Healthy Dogs
When the temperature rises, it’s not just the air that gets hot—pavement, sand, and even artificial turf can become scorching under the summer sun. And guess what? Your dog’s paws are vulnerable to burns, cracks, and discomfort if they’re not protected. Whether you’re heading out on daily walks, weekend hikes, or just letting your pup play in the yard, taking a few simple precautions can keep those precious paws safe all summer long.
The Ground Gets Hotter Than You Think
On an 85°F day, asphalt can reach over 130°F—hot enough to fry an egg in minutes and definitely hot enough to burn paw pads. If you can’t hold the back of your hand to the pavement for at least 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.
🐾 Signs Your Dog’s Paws Are in Trouble
Keep an eye out for:
- Limping or refusing to walk
- Licking or chewing feet
- Red, burned, or blistered pads
- Cracks or peeling
If you see any of these signs, it’s time to pause the outdoor activity and treat their paws with care.
Summer Paw Care Do’s & Don’ts
DO: Walk early or late.
Stick to morning or evening walks when the ground is cooler.
DO: Stick to grass or shaded trails.
Avoid blacktop and sidewalks during peak heat hours.
DO: Moisturize their pads.
Use a paw balm or natural dog-safe moisturizer to prevent cracking.
DO: Rinse and inspect.
Rinse paws after walks to remove debris, allergens, or salt. Check for thorns, ticks, or injuries.
DON’T: Shave their paws bare.
That fur between the toes helps protect them! Trim it neatly, but don’t remove it completely.
DON’T: Use human lotions.
They can soften the pads too much or contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs.
Cool Products That Help
- Dog booties: Great for hot surfaces and rough terrain.
- Cooling mats: Perfect for post-walk relaxation.
- DIY frozen treats: Keep them entertained and hydrated.
Summer is meant for fun, not paw problems. By paying attention to the heat, choosing the right times and surfaces for walks, and keeping those pads clean and moisturized, you’ll help your dog stay comfortable all season long. A little extra care now means more tail wags, more adventures, and fewer vet visits later. Stay cool and give those paws some love.
